Young children are capable of learning much more than just the plot of Bible stories. They can truly start to discover Jesus, the gospel, and who they really are. What’s Up? Elementary—a 12-week curriculum—recognizes this and starts 7- to 10-year-olds (2nd to 4th graders) on a lifelong journey of reading the Bible through the lens of Christ’s gospel and seeing what difference the gospel makes in their lives every day.
It’s easy for children to assume that if they look good, then that’s all that matters to God. This curriculum counters that tendency by presenting Bible stories that emphasize and encourage children to see that, just like the people in the Bible, they too are incapable of being “good enough” to earn God’s approval. The glory of the gospel, they learn, is that it flows from God’s freely given grace. Children are nudged in the direction of seeing how they themselves fit into the gospel story and why they need Christ’s rescue.
